For the thousands of homeless
New Yorkers who live on the city's streets, Project Renewal's
comprehensive approach to moving individuals into homes
and jobs often starts with the offer of food, a shower,
a bed, short-term treatment for addiction and primary medical
care. We therefore run a range of "low-demand" programs
so as to be able to meet people where they are and take
them to the next step in their recovery.

Project Renewal provides comprehensive medical care to clients
at our residential programs at Third Street, Kenton Hall,
New Providence and Fort Washington . Staffed by physicians,
nurse practitioners, nurses, outreach workers and other
support staff, these state-of-the-art community-based clinics
work closely with our MedVan, as well as our shelter-based
psychiatric and case management staffs to treat people who
suffer the medical ravages of homelessness. In 2000, the
clinics were awarded a grant from the Health Resourcesand Services Administration's |

Our fully outfitted MedVan provides professional primary
medical care to homeless people 'where they are' - on the
streets, in shelters, at soup kitchens and at drop-in centers.
Equipped with two fully operational examining rooms and
staffed by a team that includes a physician, social worker,
nurse practitioner, a |

pharmacist,
a psychiatrist and driver/aide, the MedVan was among the
first mobile medical units serving homeless people in the
country when it started operations in 1986. Today, it is
a national model and offers preventative, urgent and HIV/AIDS
services in addition to primary care. In 2005, the MedVan
provided healthcare to nearly 3,500 homeless New Yorkers.

Launched in 2007, the ScanVan is the nation's first mobile radiology clinic to provide both mammograms and chest x-rays to homeless and poor patients. The ScanVan meets two critical needs: serving poor and homeless women with little or no access to breast health services and screening for tuberculosis (a city study shows that homeless people contract TB at a rate 11 times that of the general population. The staff provides counseling, education, and initiates and ensures follow-up treatment for all positive screenings.
Medical Imaging Magazine focuses on the "Mobile Mission" of Project Renewal's ScanVan.
