HOPE: A Lifeline for Older New Yorkers

Project Renewal is determined to help our residents age in place with dignity. Older adults, ages 65 and up, are the fastest growing population of those experiencing homelessness. Many of our older residents are formerly homeless older adults and are managing mental illness and substance use disorder. These individuals often experience devastatingly high rates of isolation, untreated chronic health issues, depression and anxiety.

Project Renewal’s HOPE (Helping Older People Engage) program is occupational therapy focused on the support needed by this specific group, and helps them care for themselves, maintain their home, and enjoy a high quality of life. We have clearly seen a reduction in isolation and an increase in socialization and the ability to perform daily life tasks. Through direct, personalized attention from skilled occupational therapists, older adult residents can remain healthy, safe, and social at home.
