A vibrant orange and blue mural, showing anatomical drawings of two heads facing away from each other, rises behind the garden and greenhouse at Third Street Men’s Shelter. It is fall and the sun shines through the browning leaves of an overlooking tree.

Third Street Men’s Shelter is Project Renewal’s “Flagship” site, and is original to our founding in 1967 as a 48 bed detoxification shelter. This was one of the nation’s first successful treatment programs for “public inebriates,” coming at a time when arrest and incarceration were society’s most common responses to the problem. One year later, The Recovery Center would open at Third Street, a program that is still thriving.

Today, Third Street helps 175 individuals with substance use histories work towards health, sobriety, and, ultimately, permanent housing and employment. In addition to lodging and three meals a day, clients receive comprehensive case management services, plus an array of on-site substance use related and health care services.
