Bobby is a resident at Project Renewal’s East Williamsburg Shelter, and if you ask him what’s made the biggest difference in his life, he won’t point to a single moment – he’ll point to a team.

“I’ve suffered from homelessness, incarceration, substance use, an untreated heart condition, and traumatic family loss.  But now I have a team of supporters at Project Renewal that I can count on to help me meet my goals,” he said.  That team came together one piece at a time, each one adding something essential.  At Project Renewal’s mobile medical clinic, Bobby received his first comprehensive health exam in years – a simple but overdue act of self-care that opened the door to real, ongoing treatment, including a prescription to manage a heart condition that needed attention.

From there, Bobby moved into the East Williamsburg shelter, where the support extended well beyond a bed and four walls.  He joined the shelter’s occupational therapy group, taking part in yoga and chair aerobics alongside fellow residents.  These activities build physical strength and routine while also fostering connection.  He also leaned on the shelter’s case workers, building the kind of ongoing relationships that turn temporary stays into real forward momentum.

“I could finally see that there was hope,” he said.  “Project Renewal helped me get to a much better place – physically, mentally, and emotionally.”
