“The interviewers I had were awesome. They helped me recognize that I’m great at connecting with people, which is half the battle. And I feel totally comfortable now–I already know I got this!” – Human Services Training cohort member
Yesterday morning, Colgate Cares volunteers gathered virtually to conduct mock interviews with Project Renewal’s Human Services Training (HST) participants. The HST program is an accessible, two-week course that introduces clients to the basics of the human services sector and deeply focuses on soft skills such as effective communication, time management, and teamwork.
Participants arrived to class excited, talkative, and eager to participate. For some it was a welcome chance to brush up on their interview skills, while others were nervous about participating in their first interview virtually.
The Colgate team provided a safe, judgement free space and offered practical gems to help clients work through anxiety about interviewing.
“Preparation is everything,” one volunteer said. “It’s normal to be nervous, but when you come prepared with the story YOU want to tell about yourself and have some key examples in your toolbox, you’re set up for success. Don’t be afraid to brag about yourself!”
Clients had the opportunity to complete two rounds of mock interviews – one to warm up, and another to practice what they learned during the first interview and implement any feedback they received. Afterwards the group came together to debrief their experiences and exchange affirmations and advice for next steps.
“Sometimes I can be a bit long-winded with my responses but I got some tips and tricks on how to get straight to the point so I can showcase my skills better. I know I’m ready for this job, it’s just about helping the person on the other side see what I see,” one participant reflected.
It was wonderful to witness the connections made between volunteers and participants in such a short time. HST cohort members came away feeling more confident in their digital literacy and interview skills and ready to dive deeper into their training.
“The interviewers I had were awesome,” said another interviewee. “They helped me recognize that I’m great at connecting with people, which is half the battle. And I feel totally comfortable now–I already know I got this!”
